First Time for Curling in World University Games

   Curling is an option sport for the first time at the 21st Winter World University Games scheduled in January for Tarvisio, in the north-eastern part of Italy. The field has been set with an entry of ten men’s and eight women’s teams who will compete for curling medals from January 16th to 23rd , 2003, with the Games closing ceremonies set for January 26th. 

Men’s teams from Italy, Canada, Switzerland, USA, Norway, Great Britain, Japan, Russia, Czech Republic and Korea will take part as well as women’s teams from Canada, Switzerland, USA, Japan, Norway, Russia, Korea and Germany.

These teams from ten different nations will stay in the beautiful mountain community of Claut. This is in the region of Friuli-Venezia Giula where curling will be held in a brand new indoor arena facility, with a new two sheet curling rink attached, which will be a legacy for the area following the Universiade.

Les Harrison, Vice President of the WCF, has been elected as Chairman of the Technical Commission for Curling by the International University Sports Federation while Keith Wendorf, WCF Curling Development Officer, has been appointed by the WCF as Director of Competitions for Curling.

Approximately 2000 athletes and judges will attend the Universiade which is held every two years. As an option sport, Curling will be assessed for inclusion in the 2005 Universiade set for Innsbruck, Austria.

Other sports events in the Universiade include Alpine and Cross Country Ski, Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined, Biathlon, Ice Hockey, Figure Skating, Short Track, Snowboard and Carving which is a demonstration sport.
