COACHING ETIQUETTE

  • WHAT DO WE NEED TO KNOW.............
  • EVERY WHEELCHAIR USER IS DIFFERENT EACH WITH A DIFFERENT SET OF CHALLENGES
  • THEY WILL TELL YOU WHAT THEY CAN OR CANNOT DO
  • BE PREPARED TO ADAPT
  • BY MAKING SMALL ADJUSTMENTS TO YOUR COACHING STYLE YOU CAN WORK MORE EFFECTIVELY WITH DISABLED PEOPLE
  • IF YOU FEEL HELP TO PUSH A WHEELCHAIR IS REQUIRED - ASK BEFORE YOU PUSH
  • WHEN TALKING TO A WHEELCHAIR USER, DO SO FROM A POSITION THAT IS COMFORTABLE FOR BOTH OF YOU

ADAPTIONS...

  • REDUCE PLAYING AREA
  • FEATHER STICK - VARIABLE LENGTH
  • BE AWARE OF THE CURLERS GETTING COLD - DO NOT HAVE TOO LONG A SESSION - REST TIMES PERHAPS A TEN MINUTE BREAK

CLOTHING RECOMMENDATIONS

  • LAYERS RATHER THAN THICK TOPS
  • THERMAL UNDERWEAR
  • WARM TROUSERS - NO JEANS
  • WARM FOOTWEAR - INSOLES
  • GLOVES, HAT
  • NO PART OF THE BODY TO TOUCH THE METAL ON THE WHEELCHAIR

SAFETY CODE & PRACTICE

  • CHECK OUT YOUR ICE RINK FOR EASY ACCESS
  • A RAMP MAYBE REQUIRED FOR ACCESS ONTO ICE PAD

GETTING ON ICE ...

  • REMOVE GRIT FROM WHEELS OF WHEELCHAIR
  • MAKE SURE RAMP IS IN PLACE
  • HELPERS HAVE GRIPPY SOLES ON
  • SAFETY BELTS MAYBE REQUIRED

DELIVERY ...

  • BRAKES ON
  • WORK THE BUDDY SYSTEM (e.g Wheelchair curler gripping the rear wheels of the thrower's chair)

EQUIPMENT ...

  • TAKE CARE WHEN MOVING STONES
  • DON'T SWING BRUSHES

ETIQUETTE ....

  • WHEN MOVING WHEELCHAIRS UP AND DOWN THE SHEET MAKE SURE THEY ARE AT THE SIDE OF THE SHEET
