World Junior Curling Championships 2002

Women's tournament, Draw 1

Close call for Swedish ladies...

There is no such thing as a free lunch. Here we had the double finalist of the WJCC, Matilda Mattsson against a team, Italy, that haven't participated in the World's for so long that not even the statistics people couldn't find out when it happened last. It was mostly a question of how many ends that would be necessary before the handshakes...

It turned out to be 11. The Swedish team had a hard time getting a grip on the Italians, being down with 1-4 halfway through the game, leading with 6-4 after 7, then being one down coming home. With her last stone Mattsson hit the Italian shot but rolled of, sending the game into an extra end. The Swedes won the game by stealing two in the extra end but the Italians sure sent a message to the other teams.
