World Junior Curling Championships 2002

Men's tournament, Semifinals

Canada vs Sweden in the final

A deuce in the second and a stolen point in the fifth was all the Swedish Eric Carlsén rink needed to control their semifinal against Switzerland. In the second end Sweden used their last stone advantage taking two and that was as close as the Swiss got in the rest of the game. The Swedish team has an excellent defensive game and they used it masterfully through the game.

Finally, Sweden won with 6-4 without the last stone being played and will face David Hamblin's Canadians in the final.

Hamblin had a rougher ride to tomorrow's final in their semifinal against Scotland. The Scots played excellent especially during the first half of the game and going into the 6th the score was 2-2.

In the 6th Kenneth Edward had to hit the Canadian shot very thin to move it sideways for two points but missed it by a centimeter allowing a one point stolen end to Canada. This was what turned the game around and passed the initiative to the Canucks.

The Scots equalised in the 7th but left their last stone in the 8th slightly short leaving a draw to the button for Hamblin. He was able to sneak  it in and took a 5-3 lead.

After a blank end, things got interesting in the last end when Canada choose to put their first stones in the house. Scotland tried to freeze and the Candians removed the Scottish stones through the end. When Edward was to play his last stone, he had a hit & stick to win the game but hit the first stone slightly thin and just skimmed the shot ending the game with a Canadian point, 6-3.
