World Junior Championships 2003 to Flims, Switzerland

  The World Junior Curling Championships in 2003 has been awarded to Flims in Switzerland. That was announced today by Roy Sinclair, the President, when the Semi General Assembly of the World Curling Federation, WCF,  was held at Vierumäki, Finland where the European Championships take place this week. This will be third time the World Junior Curling Championships will take place in Switzerland. In 1978 and 1993 Grindelwald was the host town for the WJCC.

Flims is situated about one hour´s car drive south of Zürich. In 1998 Flims was the host town for the European Championships.

2004 in Canada 

It was also announced by the World Curling Federation, that the 2004 World Junior Championships will take place in Canada. For 2005 the junior championships will be held in Torino, Italy as a test event for the 2006 Winter Olympic Games according to the same format as for 1997 in Karuizawa Japan and 2001 for Ogden, USA.

Curling in University Winter Games 2003 in Tarvisio, Italy

Les Harrison, Vice President of the WCF, announced that curling will be on the programme at the University Winter Games in Tarvisio, Italy 15 – 26 of January 2003. The curling tournament will be organised in the village of Claut in a brand new ice rink. Eight teams of each gender will compete and the nations will be invited by the World University Sports Association. The host nation Italy has a guaranteed place. If there will be more than eight nations interested they will use a ranking, based on the results from the World Championships and World Junior Championships of 2000 and 2001.

World Wheelchair Curling Championships 2002

Per Näsman of Sweden, convenor of the Marketing and Development Committee reported that the first official World Wheelchair Curling Championships will take place in Sursee outside Zürich in Switzerland from 21st to 26th of January 2002. The championships have attracted altogether 10 teams from following nations:  Bulgaria, Canada. Denmark, England, Germany, Italy, Scotland, Sweden, USA and the host Switzerland.

  The championship will be played according to the same format as the other world championships. First a round-robin from where the best four teams advance to semifinals, final or game for the bronze medals. The play-off will be played during the Saturday, January 26th.

  Näsman also reported that the curling seminars in Füssen, Germany last summer was a great success and that the WCF and the German Curling Association will continue organising such seminars and youth camps in Füssen. For the summer 2002, July 10 – 21, the invitations are ready to be sent out to the curling world. Two new seminars will be organised, “The business of curling” and “Youth Curling Development”.

Olympic Celebration Tour

The Olympic medalists at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City will be invited by the World Curling Federation in a development project called “Olympic Celebration Tour”. The medallists will be asked to go out to various countries in the early autumn of 2002 along with qualified instructors to run coaching seminars and promote the sport.
