Canadian men edge Switzerland at World Juniors

Sweden, Scotland, USA victorious

VANCOUVER – Canada’s Brett Gallant defeated Switzerland’s David Baertschiger 10-9 in an extra end to move to 3-0 at the 2009 World Junior Curling Championships at the Vancouver Olympic Centre.

 

The Swiss led by scores of 4-1 and 5-3 before the Canadians rallied with scores of three in both the seventh and ninth ends. Baertschiger scored a deuce in the eighth and, down 9-7 in the final end, he scored another deuce for the tie.

 

In the extra end, Gallant faced three Swiss counters and made a takeout for the 10-9 victory.

 

Baertschiger outshot Gallant 73 per cent to 63 per cent in the match.

 

In other games, Scotland’s Graeme Black scored two in the final frame to overcome a stubborn Konstantin Kaempf of Germany 7-5; defending champion Chris Plys of the United States defeated Norway’s Kristian Rolvsjord 9-8; and Sweden’s Oskar Eriksson won a nailbiter against China’s Jialiang Zang by a 7-6 scoreline.

 

Canada leads at 3-0, with Denmark at 2-0 and Sweden and the United States at 2-1. Switzerland and Scotland are both 1-1, Norway is 1-2 and three teams – China, Germany and Russia – are 0-2.
